Quick Slant: New in-stadium frequency

Oct. 12, 2012

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

Those who like to listen to Joe Fisher’s live call on the radio while sitting in the stands will be happy to read this note. Many commercial stations require a seven-second delay (or more) for FCC security precautions, including our own flagship, WLAC-AM. Beginning with Saturday’s Florida football game, Vanderbilt will employ a low frequency FM signal (only heard inside the stadium or gymnasium) that will avoid the delay and enable watching and listening to be in sync. That frequency is expected to be 92.5 FM but it is possible on gameday for technical reasons the signal location will have to change, in which case the video board will promote the location on your radio dial.

Barring the early arrival of his second child, golf star Brandt Snedeker will be honored during the second quarter of Saturday’s Florida game.

Our National Commodore Club will be hosting tours of McGugin Center this Friday (Oct. 12) from 4-6 p.m. as part of the Parent’s Day Weekend.

Two reasons to attend baseball’s annual Black and Gold Series, which will be Thursday, Friday and Sunday of Homecoming week, Oct. 25, 26 and 28: First and foremost, it’s another very good team and secondly, come see the brand new sports turf that now covers all but the mound and view how the game plays on this surface.

Congratulations to former Vanderbilt staffer Brad Bates on becoming Director of Athletics at Boston College. Bates, who has been A.D. at Miami University the past 10 years after serving here for 17 years, is without a doubt one of the best men in collegiate athletics. BC doesn’t realize just how good a choice it made.
