Oct. 5, 2012

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

Yes, it is very early in the collegiate golf season but that said, how long has it been since both Vanderbilt golf programs were ranked in the nation’s Top 15 by Golfweek? Earlier in the week, the ratings listed our women’s program 11th and the up-and-coming men’s team 12th.

Over the years Vanderbilt Athletics has done many things to show our pride in the men and women in our armed forces. We are especially excited about plans for next week’s football game with Florida. “Salute to Armed Forces Day” will include honoring some Wounded Warriors who will be at the game, as will the 101st Airborne Marching Band that will join Vanderbilt’s Spirit of Gold band at halftime.

To enhance the gameday experience, our marketing staff has added “Ask Me a Question” stations outside stadium Gates 2 and 3. If these representatives don’t have the answer to your question it won’t take long for them to find it.

We are looking forward to hosting the SEC’s Cross Country championship Friday, October 26. Our women won the championship last year when it was held in Maryville, Tenn.

Baseball season ticket renewals will be in the mail very soon and are available to renew online as some already have. With the strong finish to last season and many players returning, coupled with the nation’s top-rated freshman class, anticipation is running high.
