As the calendar flips to July and the mercury continues to rise, Conrad Gregor’s bat is heating up for the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod League.
Gregor enters Tuesday night’s game riding a nine-game hitting streak going 12-for-37 (.324) with four runs and 11 RBI. The Dores’ first baseman belted a pair of home runs and three in two games against Falmouth and Hyannis earlier in the streak then followed up with a grand slam against Yarmouth-Dennis over the weekend.
Fellow rising juniors, Tony Kemp and Kevin Ziomek have been solid for the Cotuit Kettleers. Ziomek has been dominant in his three starts going 1-0 with a 1.72 ERA with 25 strikeouts and four walks in 15.2 innings. He has fanned at least eight in each of his starts and struck out nine batters in 6.1 innings against Bourne over the weekend.
Kemp recently saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end but the Vandy star already has nine stolen bases, 14, runs scored, three doubles and three triples in his first 12 games with Cotuit. He swiped three bases and scored four runs in a game against Chatham earlier this summer.
In the New England Collegiate Baseball League, several Commodores have stood out this summer.
Vince Conde has belted five home runs and knocked in 14 runs in 14 games for the Laconia Muskrats. Over his last six games, he has four multi-hit games including a two home run game and a five-RBI game.
John Norwood has done a little of everything for the Newport Gulls in his first 11 games. Norwood has scored eight runs, belted two home runs and driven in 11 runs for the first place Gulls. He posted his first three-hit game of the summer scoring four runs with a double, home run and two RBI against New Bedford on Monday (July 2).
Vandy teammate and Gulls teammate Adam Ravenelle has been solid for the Newport pitching staff with 11 strikeouts in seven innings over three games.
For the Sanford Mainers, Will Cooper has been a big addition. Cooper enters the week hitting .333 in 10 games for the Mainers. He already has four multi-hit games, including a season-best three hits in his last game against New Bedford.
In the Northwoods League, Jared Miller has starred for the Rochester Honkers. Miller was named NWL Pitcher of the night for his outing on Monday night. The big lefty allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts over seven frames against Thunder Bay to earn his second win for the Honkers. In his three starts, Miller is 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 17 innings.
