Birmingham, Ala. – Quarterback Jordan Rodgers, running back Zac Stacy and cornerback Trey Wilson will join Head Coach James Franklin as Vanderbilt representatives at the 2012 Southeastern Conference Football Media Days scheduled in mid-July.
The Vanderbilt contingent will meet with sportswriters on July 17, the opening day of SEC’s wildly successful Media Day activity held at the Wynfrey Hotel south of Birmingham. The Commodores will be joined by South Carolina and the SEC’s two newest members, Missouri and Texas A&M, on July 17.
Rodgers, a redshirt senior from Chico, Calif., sparked the Commodore offense last year when inserted as the starting quarterback. Stacy, a senior from Centreville, Ala., is coming off the finest season ever by a Vanderbilt running back. Wilson, a senior from Shreveport, La., ranks among the SEC’s top defensive backs.
Franklin said the Commodores will be well represented by Rodgers, Stacy and Wilson.
“Jordan, Zac and Trey will do a tremendous job of representing the Black and Gold and Vanderbilt University. They’re part of a strong senior class that provides outstanding leadership for our football team,” Franklin said.
Rodgers, the younger brother of Green Bay Packers starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, also earned the respect of his Vanderbilt teammates. He enters the 2012 season as an offensive co-captain, elected by teammates at the conclusion of spring drills in April.
Stacy was one of the league’s top rushers as a junior, setting Vanderbilt single-season records with 1,193 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. He ranks second among active SEC backs with 2,002 career rushing yards and 20 career rushing touchdowns. His 2011 rushing total also ranks first among all SEC backs returning this season.
Stacy surpassed 100 rushing yards in five games last year, topped by a 198-yard effort against Army, the No 3 single-game performance in Commodore history. Stacy also scored 13 of his 14 touchdowns during the final seven games of the season. He tallied three rushing touchdowns in wins over Army, Kentucky and Wake Forest.
Stacy enters his final year within reach of several Vanderbilt career rushing records. He needs 631 yards to surpass Frank Mordica’s 33-year-old team record of 2,632 yards. He also needs seven rushing touchdowns to eclipse Dean Davidson’s 26-touchdown total set from 1947-50.
Wilson developed into a superb defender and big-play contributor as a first-year starter at cornerback in 2011. He set career highs in virtually every statistical category, including three interceptions, 11 passes defended and 30 total tackles.
Wilson also made the most of his interceptions, becoming the first Commodore defensive player in nearly 40 years to return two picks for touchdowns. He also earned the SEC’s top weekly defensive award after a two-interception performance in Vanderbilt’s victory over Ole Miss.
