June 25, 2012

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

If you have been considering changing your seat location in either Memorial Gymnasium or Vanderbilt Stadium, or perhaps you are planning to buy season tickets for the first time, you might consider attending the National Commodore Club’s select-a-seat event Tuesday, June 26 from 5-7 p.m. Various department representatives will be on hand to personally show you specific seating options. Parking will be in the flat lot behind the Hawkins Field outfield bleachers just off 25th Avenue South and you will enter Memorial Gym off the southeast plaza that overlooks baseball’s center field.

It’s camping season around Vanderbilt athletics. Every June we entertain hundreds, probably closer to thousands, of kids at a wide variety of sports camps led by our varsity coaches. The years change but the kids don’t and neither do the parents; the little people are excited – they can’t wait for their camp t-shirt, meet new friends and learn some basic skills. They learn more than how to play the game – the little ones learn about being independent for a few hours each day as they take instruction from strangers to them. The moms and dads that nervously watch as their pride and joy runs onto the ball field need not worry – the kids are having the time of their life.

Speaking of the NCC, our annual fund is set to have its best year in over a decade by the time the fiscal year closes July 1. We’ll update you later with final totals.
