Senior Ally Carey and junior Paige Cahill have been named 2012 All-West/Midwest Region first-team honorees by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. Both Carey and Cahill are now eligible for inclusion in the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced during the upcoming championship weekend.
“We are extremely proud of both Ally and Paige,” VU Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. “They’re both incredibly deserving of this honor. Paige has been invaluable to us because of her ability to shut down the opposing team’s top attacker, and Ally continues to show that she is one of the best players in the country by dominating all aspects of the game.”
Carey becomes the second Commodore to make the All-Region first team in three straight seasons, joining defender Sasha Cielak (2006-08). Carey also has been a first-team All-American in each of the last two seasons. This season, the Bel Air, Md., native led Vanderbilt in goals, points, draw controls and caused turnovers. The school’s career leader in ground balls and draw controls, Carey broke her own VU record with 80 draw controls this year.
Cahill started all 16 games on defense for the second consecutive season. She ranked among team leaders in all three defensive categories. A native of Nashville, Cahill typically matched up against the opponent’s top offensive player. She earned second-team All-American Lacrosse Conference honors earlier this month.
This season marks the seventh time that at least two Commodores have been first-team honorees on the All-West/Midwest team. A total of 128 student-athletes across four regions were honored on either a first- or second-team honor roll. Twenty-five of this year’s honorees play in the American Lacrosse Conference.
The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on June 16, 2012 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
