Sunscreen, comfortable shoes, light clothing, sunglasses, umbrella. Check, check, check, check and … check.
For those familiar with attending golf tournaments, these items are drilled into your subconscious. However, for people who will be taking in a golf tournament for the first time this week at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships, these necessities can easily be forgotten, and the consequences can be painful.
If you have these items in your car or by the door ready to go, you are off to a good start.
But now that you have your materials ready to go, where do you head once you get to the course? If you are here to watch an individual player or a specific team, the answer is simple; you follow the the team or individual hole-by-hole. If you are just wanting to experience championship-level golf, figuring out where to go can be much more difficult. With a course setup that measures 6,377 yards, there is plenty of green space for everyone to choose from, but where are the best locations to watch?
To find out, we asked someone who knows the course better than anyone else – Vanderbilt Legends Club superintendent Joe Kennedy, who has been at the course since 1991.
Kennedy recommends two locations where spectators have sightlines to multiple holes. The first spot is where the greens on hole Nos. 14 and 17 meet, and the second location is behind the No. 3 green.
“Most people head to the greens at holes 14 and 17,” Kennedy said. “You can see the incoming shots on the par-5 14, the par-4 17 and then watch them as they are teeing off on 18.
“Behind the No. 3 green is also a good place. You can watch tee shots on 4 and 13 from this location, and also see tee shots coming into the par-3 Nos. 3 and No. 12.”
There will also be bleachers setup in two locations on the course, including one of the spots recommended by Kennedy. The bleachers are located behind hole No. 17 and behind hole No. 2.
“It is a very spectator-friendly course that is pretty easy to walk,” Kennedy said. “The two spots that I mentioned are the best locations, but there are plenty of other spots that are excellent for watching golf.”
No matter where you head on the course, you will be guaranteed to see some excellent golf at a very good price. Tickets start at $8 for adults and $5 for youth/students (17 and under) each day. All-session passes are available for $25 for adults and $15 for youth and students.
“The folks at Vanderbilt and at Legends are ready for a lot of people to come out,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Greg Allen said. “It is free parking so it is easy to get in and out of, and it is a really cheap ticket. You will see some good golf. These girls can flat out play, they can hit it long and can make a lot of putts, so they are in for some good golf.”
Play gets underway at 7:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday with Baylor, Florida and Virginia teeing off first. Vanderbilt will hit the first tee at 12:55 p.m. The Commodores are paired with LSU and Texas A&M. (View Day 1 Tee Times )
