Junior Anthony Gomez has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for his outstanding play in Vanderbilt’s series win at No. 4 LSU and midweek victory over #23 Louisville.
Gomez started the week with a two-hit outing against the Cardinals driving in the tying run with a double in the third inning of the Commodores’ eventual 3-2 victory. At LSU on Friday night, Gomez singled off SEC Pitcher of the Week Kevin Gausman for one of the Dores’ five hits in the game. In Saturday’s 6-3 win over the Tigers, Gomez posted his second four-hit game of the season matching a career-best. He doubled in the first, knocked in a run with a single in the third then singled and scored in the seventh. His RBI-double in the eighth helped put the Tigers away and even the series, with the victory also clinching the Commodores’ spot in the SEC Tournament. Vanderbilt clinched the series with a 5-4 win in 10 innings on Sunday with Gomez’s run-scoring single tying the game in the fifth inning.
Vanderbilt hosts Ole Miss in the final weekend of the regular season starting Thursday night on ESPNU’s national broadcast at 6:30 p.m. The Rebels and Commodores play Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. For ticket information visit vucommodores.com or call 615.322.GOLD.
