VU earns 18th straight NCAA bid

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team earned its 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament bid on Tuesday, May 1. The Commodores will face San Diego, the champion of the West Coast Conference in the first round, in Los Angeles, Calif., on Friday, May 11.

Host Southern Cal, who is the number five national seed, will face Fairfield. The winners will return in the second round on Saturday, May 12. The winner of that match will move on to the NCAA Championships, held May 17-22, at the University of Georgia.

The match versus San Diego is set for 1:00 p.m. CT at USC’s Marks Tennis Stadium. The winners return at 5:00 p.m. CT on Saturday.

The Commodores enter the tournament ranked 26th in the most recent ITA rankings. They posted a dual match record of 16-9 on the season, while going 7-4 in SEC play to finish fifth.

They boast two singles players in the top-100, No. 37 Jackie Wu and No. 89 Lauren Mira. In addition, Wu and Mira pair together to form the 26th-ranked doubles team in the nation.

The Toreros are 13-9 and in the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year after winning their first-ever WCC title with a 4-2 upset of No. 38 Pepperdine in the finals of the WCC Tournament. USD is ranked No. 78 in the most recent ITA rankings, while their top singles player, Anna Depenau, is ranked No. 112 in the nation.

Last season, Vanderbilt advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 13th time in program history. In regional play, the second-seeded Commodores downed Winthrop, 4-0, before upsetting top-ranked Tennessee, 4-3, in Knoxville, Tenn., to advance to the Sweet 16. They fell to fourth-ranked North Carolina, 4-0 to end the run.
