NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team earned its 11th NCAA Tournament bid on Tuesday, May 1. The Commodores will take on Notre Dame in the first round in Columbus, Ohio.

The winner of that match will take on the winner of a first round match between Ohio State, the fifth seed nationally, and East Tennessee State.

The match against the Fighting Irish will begin at 9:00 a.m. CT on Saturday, May 12, at OSU’s Varsity Tennis Courts. The second round match on Sunday is set for 11:00 a.m. CT.

The Commodores posted an 8-15 record on the season, posting an ITA ranking of 40th thanks to the depth of the Southeastern Conference. They are making their fifth NCAA appearance in the last six seasons.

Vanderbilt boasts two players in the ITA’s singles rankings. Charlie Jones is ranked 42nd, while Gonzales Austin is 81st. In addition, Austin pairs with Alex DiValerio to form the No. 22 doubles team in the nation.

Notre Dame is ranked No. 29 in the most recent ITA rankings. The Fighting Irish went 20-8 on the season, placing third at the BIG EAST Conference Championships where they defeated Villanova, fell to No. 65 South Florida, and topped St. John’s in the third-place match.

Greg Andrews is ranked No. 57 in the last ITA singles rankings, while Casey Watt is No. 111. Watt and Niall Fitzgerald make up the nation’s No. 55 doubles paring.

Last season, the Commodores were the third seed in the Knoxville, Tenn., region, where they dropped a 4-2 decision to second-seeded Virginia Tech. Vandy took the doubles point, but only got two singles wins against the Hokies, leading to the 4-2 loss.
