Marie Casares was named the Freshman of the Week by the SEC for her wins against Ole Miss and Mississippi State last week.
Casares extended her winning streak to five straight singles matches, defeating Erin Stephens (Ole Miss) and Naomi Tran (MSU), helping sweep #62 Mississippi State, and providing one of Vanderbilt’s two points scored in their loss to the #16 Rebels.
Paired with her doubles partner, fellow freshman Ashleigh Antal, Casares picked up her fourth straight doubles win as well.
“We’re proud of her,” said Head Coach Geoff Macdonald. “She works hard on the courts every day and goes out there with a great attitude. Marie is a tough competitor and those two wins were big for her last week.”
Casares is ranked the #106 player by the ITA, rejoining her teammates Jackie Wu and Lauren Mira on the list a few weeks ago.
