March 17, 2012

NASHVILLE – The eighth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team will open American Lacrosse Conference play Sunday by playing host to No. 11 Penn State at the VU Lacrosse Complex. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.

A win Sunday would give the Commodores a 6-1 record for the first time in program history. Vanderbilt has won four straight games, including a 14-12 victory over Louisville on Wednesday.

The Commodores (5-1) are led in scoring by senior Ally Carey (13 goals) and sophomore Katie Mastropieri (12 goals). Carey is the reigning ALC Offensive Player of the Week after her performances in victories over No. 18 Boston College and Canisius. Mastropieri notched a career-best five goals in VU’s Wednesday victory.

Through eight games, Penn State boasts five players with more than 10 goals scored this season. The Nittany Lions (6-2) are paced by Mackenzie Cyr and Tatum Coffey’s 17 goals each.

Sunday’s game marks the 15th matchup between the two schools in a series that is currently tied 7-7.

Following Sunday’s game, the Commodores will head back on the road to face No. 1 Northwestern next Friday, March 23. After a game at New Hampshire on March 28, Vanderbilt will return home for three straight home games to open April.
