Jenkins, Taylor pick up more honors

March 12, 2012

Less than 24 hours after hoisting the 2012 Southeastern Conference Tournament championship trophy, the Vanderbilt men’s basketball team received more recognition Monday from Associated Press writers.

For the second straight season, junior guard John Jenkins made the AP’s All-SEC first team. Senior forward Jeffery Taylor also garnered second team honors.

Jenkins, a unanimous choice on the first team along with Kentucky forward Anthony Davis, led the league in all games in scoring (19.9) for the second year in a row. Jenkins was named SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player after Vanderbilt topped No. 1 Kentucky, 71-64, Sunday in the title game.

Taylor finished second in scoring (16.4) in the conference and was instrumental in the Commodores’ first SEC Tournament championship in 61 years. Taylor contributed a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds to help the ‘Dores halt the Wildcats’ 24-game winning streak.

League coaches placed Jenkins and Taylor on the All-SEC first team last week.

Vanderbilt (24-10) will be making its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance under Head Coach Kevin Stallings. The fifth-seeded Commodores will take on 12th-seeded Harvard Thursday in Albuquerque, N.M., at 3:40 p.m. CT on TNT.
