VU at No. 7, hosts BC Wednesday Noon

NASHVILLE – The Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team moved up to No. 7 in the latest IWLCA Division I Poll, the Commodores’ highest ranking in program history. Vanderbilt is 2-1 on the season with wins over the Nos. 5 and 6 teams in the IWLCA’s preseason poll, Duke and Stanford, respectively.

The previous high-water mark for the Commodores in the IWLCA poll was a No. 8 ranking, which has been achieved three times. The last time the ‘Dores were at No. 8 was on April 19, 2010, on the heels of a 10-game winning streak.

Vanderbilt also was voted No. 8 in the 2003 preseason poll and in the week 6 poll (April 9) of 2002. The ’02 squad started the year at 7-2 before making the school’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Along with their impressive ranking in the IWLCA coaches’ poll, the Commodores have been tabbed No. 6 this week in the Inside Lacrosse deBeer media poll.

Top 20 Matchups

Vanderbilt’s Wednesday matchup with Boston College (12 p.m. CT, VU Lacrosse Complex – | LIVE VIDEO) is one of three mid-week games to feature a pair of nationally ranked teams. Along with the game between the seventh-ranked Commodores and 18th-ranked Eagles, No. 5 Florida will play at No. 15 Georgetown and No. 17 Loyola travels to No. 12 Penn State.

Five out of the six teams from the American Lacrosse Conference are ranked in this week’s poll, with Johns Hopkins receiving votes after a loss last week to Stony Brook.

Wednesday’s game between VU and BC marks the first matchup between the two programs. The Eagles are the third and final team from the Atlantic Coast Conference on VU’s 2012 slate. The ‘Dores defeated Duke to open the season but lost at No. 2 North Carolina.

Teammates and Competitors

Five members of the 2011-12 U.S. Women’s National Team will be a part of Wednesday’s matchup between Vanderbilt and Boston College. Vanderbilt senior Ally Carey and assistant coach Amber Falcone (North Carolina, ’09) are teammates of Boston College senior Kristin Igoe and assistant coach Acacia Walker (Maryland, ’05). BC Head Coach Bowen Holden is an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s National Team.

All four national team players from VU and BC made the 24-woman roster for the 2012 North American Challenge Cup, to be held July 13-15, 2012, in Oshawa, Canada, host of the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup.
