Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

Football season ticket sales are approaching 10,000 as many people took advantage of buying during the early-bird sales opportunity. This pace is well ahead of recent years; fans liked what they saw last fall.

Have you ever wondered if Commodore student-athletes enjoy their experience? That answer for the men’s basketball team was obvious in Memorial Gymnasium during our Senior Night game with Florida. The pregame ceremonies and post-game tears offered a rare glimpse into heartfelt emotion many of our Black and Gold warriors feel about their teammates, their sport and their Vanderbilt days.

We’ve mentioned before that Vanderbilt is hosting the NCAA Women’s Golf Tournament May 22-25 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin. To make this tournament tick, we need a small army of volunteers, up to 150 a day. We already have a good foundation of volunteers but we need more.

For the sports fan, the outdoor enthusiast or someone that simply enjoys being a part of a team, this is good duty as volunteering goes! There are a variety of job categories and nearly everyone can be matched to their level of availability and interest. Most duties require little knowledge of golf so novices can be helpful. You can get more information – with no obligation – by going clicking here. Someone from Vanderbilt’s golf committee will then follow-up to answer questions or sign you up.

Congratulations to former Commodore basketball star Carolyn Peck, who is representing us this week at the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament as part of the SEC’s “Great” program. Carolyn was one of our early leaders, graduating in 1988 and gaining fame as the head coach of Purdue’s 1999 NCAA championship team. She is now a high-profile analyst for ESPN’s women’s basketball coverage.
