Gonzales Austin was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his weekend performance for the Commodores as Vanderbilt turned around a three-game slide, defeating both Brown and No. 64 Northwestern.
Austin was undefeated in both singles and doubles, as he paired up with sophomore Blake Bazarnik for an 8-2 doubles win over Northwestern, and a 9-8(7-5) win over Brown, clinching the double point in that match.
He topped Brown’s Michael Riechmann 7-6(7-4), 6-0, and Northwestern’s Sidarth Balaji 6-2, 6-3. Austin’s performance against Brown helped the Dores hand the Bears their first loss of the season.
The Miami, Fla. native headlined an impressive freshman class as one of the top recruits who came to campus this year.
