Joe Fisher’s Mailbag Submit Your Question Wondering about a player, a game or another topic involving the Commodores? The Voice of the Commodores Joe Fisher will answer a variety of questions from fans throughout the year on VUcommodores.com. |
Hi Joe! I love the enthusiasm you bring to all Vandy broadcasts without sounding like a complete homer. You are not afraid to call a bad play/bad call for what it is. My question is this: why are there still the every four-minute media timeouts at home basketball games when the game is not on television? Is it because the coaches/players are accustomed to having that break?
– Logan – White House, Tenn.
Thanks for the kind words. I think everyone listening clearly knows who I am pulling for, but I also think it’s important to be objective and give credit to the opponent for a good play or to point out a mistake on our part. The system of media timeouts was developed a number of years ago to help standardize the flow of the game and to accommodate both radio and television. Don’t forget about us on the radio! About the only variation now is the length of the timeouts, based on which network is carrying the game.
It seems like the noise level at the mighty Vandy Memorial Gym is back to where it used to be … and I think the boys feed off of it in games. What do you think?
– Denise Volz – Nashville, Tenn.
I definitely agree our guys feed off the energy. I think we’ve pretty consistently produced that over the years, but when you have a game like last Saturday, with two neighbors and talented teams that go at it like they did from start to finish, the crowd just naturally elevates its game too. And the crowd Saturday was terrific!
Joe, we all adore John Jenkins. And, of course, we would give ANYTHING if he would stay for his senior season. In my opinion, he would be the top dog, star of the show, and other appropriate titles for him. Any word on this monumental decision?
– Pam Lovvorn – Nashville, Tenn.
No word, and I don’t think you’ll hear anything on that topic until well after the season. My guess is John will go through the same draft evaluation process he went through last year, then once he gets all the information he and his family will make the decision. But, I guarantee you right now, John is totally focused on what this team can do this season.
