Vandy Game Notes (vs. Sam Houston State) ![]()
The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team (3-0) returns to action on Tuesday, November 22, when they host Sam Houston State (2-0). Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Gym.
Scouting the Commodores
Vanderbilt has continued to rely on strong guard play through its first three games of 2011-12, all victories. The team’s leading scorer is sophomore guard Jasmine Lister, who is averaging 15.7 points per game, while adding 7.0 assists per game. Also in the backcourt, Christina Foggie is posting 11.3 points per game, while freshman guard Maggie Morrison is recording 9.0 points per game and dishing out 6.0 assists per game. That is not to say post play has been lacking. Redshirt sophomore center Stephanie Holzer is second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg), while leading the squad in rebounding (9.0 rpg). Junior forward Tiffany Clarke ranks third in scoring and rebounding, with 11.7 ppg and 6.7 rpg. As a team, the Commodores are averaging 25.0 assists per game and have registered 28 assists in each of their past two contests. The 28 helpers are the highest total since 32 versus Alabama in March 2006.
Scouting the Bearkats
Sam Houston State stands at 2-0 after a season-opening win over the University of Texas-Tyler, 94-74, and an 87-53 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor. Forward Sequeena Thomas picked-up Southland Conference Player of the Week honors after scoring 23 points in just 23 minutes of action in the opener versus UT-Tyler. She leads the team in scoring with 23.5 points per game. Three more starters are averaging double-figures in Britni Martin (14.5 ppg), Angela Beadle (13.5 ppg) and Jasmin Wiley (13.0 ppg). Beadle is the team’s leading rebounder, pulling down 10.5 boards per contest, while Martin leads the way with 9.0 assists per game.

This is the first-ever meeting between Vanderbilt and Sam Houston State in women’s basketball.
Commodores vs. Southland
Vanderbilt has posted a 6-0 record against the Southland Conference. The most meetings, as well as the most recent meetings have come against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Commodores took a win in Corpus Christi in the 2005-06 season, before taking wins in Nashville in 2006-07 and 2008-09. The first meeting with a Southland team came in the 1991-92 season, a 104-62 win over Texas-Arlington. Vanderbilt then defeated Stephen F. Austin in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1993, en route to its only Final Four appearance. Vandy also defeated Nicholls State in the 1994-95 campaign.
On-Deck
Vanderbilt hosts its annual Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday & Saturday, November 25 & 26. The tournament opens at 2:00 p.m. on Friday when the Commodores host crosstown foe Lipscomb. The second game, at 4:00 p.m., will feature Liberty versus No. 13/14 Oklahoma. The consolation game will be on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., while the championship will follow at 4:00 p.m.
