Between the Ropes

A Good Tradition Continues
Golf is still a gentlemen’s game. Opposing players congratulate each other on good shots. Parents and fans wish each other good luck – even opposing fans! Players are on a personal honor system in following golf’s sometimes complicated rule book and everyone shakes hands on the 18th green and says how much they enjoyed the round. It’s a refreshing environment.

A Titan in Our Midst
NFL buffs do a double-take when they notice the stocky guy intently following Vandy’s No. 1 player but Al Del Greco is just another interested parent to the Commodores. The former Auburn star and Tennessee Titan kicker was a quality golfer before son Trey dropped football to concentrate on golf. Al now hosts a sports talk show in Birmingham.

Beware of the Front
The front side played especially difficult today as a mild breeze and challenging pin placements made it tricky on just about everybody. Texas, for example, was an impressive 10-under par on the first day but ended today eight-over.

Hofmann’s Two Hole Blues
The normally super steady Adam Hofmann was cruising along at plus-two after 12 holes when his wheels temporarily came off. The senior’s two-hole catastrophe began with a four-putt that led to a triple bogey on the par 5 third (the team played the back nine first), then suffered a double bogey on the par 4 sixth.

New Lineup Didn’t Help
Coach Tom Shaw changed his rotation today, playing Trey DelGreco, Adam Hofmann, Charlie Grace, Hunter Stewart and Will Snipes in 1-5 order. The Commodores were paired with Ohio State and co-host Central Florida.

Arnie’s New Army
The team worked nearly two hours on the practice range after its round but then hurried back to the hotel to clean up and return for the tournament dinner, where all the players were eagerly looking forward to meeting and hearing from Arnold Palmer.
