Question: Who is this former Commodore and what significant role did he play in the Georgia series? (see image below)
Answer: Corey Harris. In 1991 Harris rushed for what was then a career-high 169 yards in the team’s 27-25 win over No. 17 Georgia. Harris’ only touchdown in the game gave the Commodores the lead for good and came after he picked up a fumble by QB Marcus Wilson and ran 51 yards into the end zone.
The game marked the last time Vanderbilt defeated Georgia at home, and it also was the first of four straight wins that season under first-year Head Coach Gerry DiNardo.
Georgia had a chance to kick a game-winning field goal on two occasions after an offsides penalty, but missed each time.
“To be perfectly honest, what I was thinking was that it’s (close loss) not going to happen,” DiNardo said after the game. “And I hope that’s what our players were thinking. Especially with the field goal. I felt pretty good about the first one. Now, the second time, I was a little bit more concerned.”
Harris finished the season with 1,103 rushing yards – a single-season record that remains to this day.
Thanks to all who guessed on Vanderbilt’s Facebook fan page. Congrats to Matt Farless for being the first to guess Harris and the significant role he played in the Georgia series.
