Sept. 22, 2011

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.
James Franklin will speak Monday night (Sept. 26) at the Memphis Touchdown Club. The event will be held at the Chickasaw Country Club. To purchase tickets, contact John David Baddour at 901-486-8222 or click this link. Coach Franklin’s schedule precludes him from many appearances during the season but the Commodores do not practice on Mondays.
Reform and conference expansion are the two hottest topics in collegiate athletics and Vice Chancellor David Williams is at the forefront of the national discussion. Williams was recently appointed to the Enforcement Task Force of the newly created Presidential Working Group. He also serves as the chair of the NCAA Infractions Committee and is a member of the NCAA Division I Academic Cabinet.
We are looking forward to a pair of special events next month. We will host a “Memorial Madness” featuring our two basketball teams October 14, details to be announced soon. This is not a midnight event with a starting time planned for 8:00 p.m. During the Homecoming weekend Oct. 22-23, baseball will host west coast power Cal State-Fullerton for two games. The Saturday game’s starting time will depend upon when the Army football game kicks off. All seating will be general admission; other details will be presented when they are firm.
