Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.
ESPN’s Game Day reported last week that Southern Cal’s football field (The Coliseum) is still in tatters from a July concert. Quick Slant found that interesting as Commodore fans know we hosted a U2 concert in July and our field is in A-1 condition. Credit Vice Chancellor David Williams with the foresight to insist on a clause in the concert contract for the U2 representatives to install new turf after the music stopped.
Speaking of David Williams, he is meeting with recruits and their families representing four different programs for four and a half hours prior to the Ole Miss football weekend. Our coaches say he is superb at presenting a line of reasoning for attending Vanderbilt.
By now almost everyone paying attention has realized that our football program is getting better and the recent Sports Illustrated article does an excellent job in making that case. If you haven’t read it, it’s well worth your investment of time to do so.
Vanderbilt is hosting the annual Mason Rudolph Golf Invitational next Friday through Sunday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin. There is a men’s and a women’s tournament with teams coming from around the nation. If you like golf, come out and watch some first-rate college golfers, some of whom will become professional stars.
