FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Vanderbilt freshman Marie Casares defeated Anne-Liz Jeukeng-Nkamgouo of the United States, 7-6, 6-3, to advance in the women’s junior singles at the United States Tennis Open.
Vanderbilt Coach Geoff Macdonald was on hand to watch Casares, a native of Quito, Ecuador, turn in her sterling performance.
“Marie played a terrific match,” Macdonald said. “It is really something to advance in a tournament of this magnitude and I was very proud of her performance.”
Casares will face 15-year old phenom Taylor Townsend in the second round Monday.
