Nashville, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt Women’s Cross Country team was picked to finish third in the Southeastern Conference by the league’s coaches in a poll released by the SEC today.
It is the highest pre-season prediction for the team in school history. The women’s squad also earned one of the 12 first place votes for the first time in program history.
“Last year was a season of program bests (3rd in SEC and 3rd in NCAA Region) and I know that the women have much higher goals for this season,” Head Coach Steve Keith said. “We’ve graduated a few and added a few and I’m sure all of the other SEC schools are in the same position. The important thing is that the women, for the first time last year, put themselves in the mix for the SEC title and that has them extremely motivated this year.”
Florida was selected to win the league title on the women’s side with Arkansas expected to finish second ahead of the Commodores.
Both men’s and women’s teams start the season next Friday with a meet at Warner Park beginning at 5:30 p.m.
