Four soldiers from the U.S. Army’s esteemed 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell spent Thursday afternoon with the Commodores at the invitation of head coach James Franklin. Lt. Col. Sean Davis addressed the team during a meeting before practice.
Jordan Matthews hopes to give Vanderbilt a big-play threat at receiver. “Every day, he’s making a play or two and getting in the end zone, receivers coach Chris Beatty said. “We definitely want to get the ball in his hands, and we’re definitely going to design a few things to make sure that happens.”
The SEC released its 2011-12 men’s basketball schedule Thursday. The slate includes an ESPN GameDay appearance, two Saturday afternoon games on CBS, and 11 total games that will be featured nationally.
Kevin Stallings participated in a coaches roundtable with ESPN.com’s Andy Katz. The group talked about a number of issues including the payment of student-athletes, conference scheduling and the new draft deadline.
Former Commodore pitcher Mike Minor outdueled Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum in the Braves’ 1-0 victory last night. “It’s a pretty good accomplishment, I feel like,” Minor said. “But right now it’s more of a team thing. It’s just a big win. It’s big that I beat one of their top guys because they’re coming in probably saying, ‘Hey, we can break even right here.’ I feel like it boosts morale a little bit.”
