Quick Slant: Super Regional on deck

June 9, 2011

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

Baseball is on everyone’s mind these days. Outfield tickets for the Super Regional still remain as of this writing but we expect them to be gone by Friday’s first pitch. 16,620 fans attended last week’s Regional tournament…times are set for Friday (7:00 p.m. CT) and Saturday (8:00 p.m. CT) and if a third game is necessary, the time will be announced sometime late Saturday night.

Our crowds were tremendous at the Regional Tournament and we want them to be “super” for the Super Regional. One thing we lacked last weekend was a unity of color throughout the stands; there were `Dores in black, white, gold, gray, blue and so forth. We want to make a visual impact for television. Our printed information suggested wearing black or gold but with warm weather, Quick Slant is pushing fans to wear gold. We know, we know; there are different hues of gold and some of you don’t think you look good in gold. First, a strong panorama of gold tints will show up easily on tv as “gold”. It is a cooler color than black in the summer’s heat and finally, this is a baseball game, not a fashion show. The Beavers wear orange and black by the way.

Normally we don’t put a lot of stock into recruiting chatter, preferring to focus on the student-athletes we sign and have on campus. That said, we’ve been hearing some very encouraging reports about our football recruiting from first-hand sources. Perhaps this group of aggressive gridiron assistants has a kinship with the ways of our obviously gifted baseball recruiters.
