Carey named first-team All-American again

June 1, 2011

Vanderbilt junior midfielder Ally Carey was named a first-team All-American for the second consecutive year when the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association announced its 2011 national honors this week.

Carey ranked in the Top 10 nationally in ground balls, caused turnovers and draw controls this season while also placing among Commodore leaders in offensive output. The Bel Air, Md., native already is Vanderbilt’s all-time leader in draw controls with 183 in her three-year career.

“Ally is the first Commodore to earn first-team All-America honors twice in her career,” VU Head Coach Cathy Swezey noted. “This recognition is well-deserved, and we look forward to more outstanding things from her and our entire team next season.”

In additions to Carey’s honor, another pair of Commodores — junior Courtney Kirk and freshman Brandi Byner — were lauded on the IWLCA’s All-West/Midwest Region second team.

A product of Baltimore, Kirk led the Commodores in points and assists this season while scoring 26 goals in 16 games. A starting defender from her first collegiate game, Byner consistently kept the opponents’ top offensive threat in check.

“Courtney and Brandi both played such important roles on our team,” Swezey said. “Courtney became a real offensive leader on our squad this year and we’re all excited for her senior season. On the other side of the ball, for Brandi to earn this recognition in her first year on campus speaks volumes about the type of player she is and what she’ll be able to become.”

The IWLCA honored a total of 51 student-athletes in Division I with a selection on the All-America teams for 2011. The organization will host an All-America banquet on June 11, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
