MBB to play Louisville in 2011

May 19, 2011

The Commodore men’s basketball team will make their first trip to Louisville since February 6, 1994, to take on the Cardinals as a part of the Big East/SEC Challenge in 2011. The game will be played on Friday, December 2, at a time to be determined.

Vanderbilt, who returns all five starters from their 23-11 team in 2010-11, will participate in the revamped Big East/SEC Challenge, with all of the games being played on home courts. In previous years, the games were played on neutral floors.

“We are excited about our match-up at Louisville in the Big East/SEC Challenge,” said Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings. “Louisville has an outstanding program and it will be a great opportunity to play in a big-time road environment. We are continuing to build a quality non-conference schedule and this game certainly helps our effort.”

Louisville leads the all-time series, 8-7, with the Cardinals winning the last time the two teams played, 78-62, in 1994 in Louisville. The Cardinals lead the series, 5-3, in games played in Louisville.

The Cardinals will be one of two games against the Big East Conference in non-conference action in 2011-12 for Vanderbilt. The Commodores will also return a trip to Marquette after winning a thrilling, 77-76, decision over the Golden Eagles at Memorial Gym in 2010.

The Commodores have a 25-38 record all-time against the Big East. Earlier this week, Vanderbilt also announced that the team will compete in the 2011 Legends Classic Nov. 19 and 21, where they will be joined by Texas, N.C. State and Oregon State. The championship rounds will be played at IZOD Center in the New Jersey Meadowlands Sports Complex.
