Commodore Notes
The Commodores won the team’s 11th series of the year and improved to 40-6 on the year with a series victory at Kentucky… Vanderbilt now sits atop the Southeastern Conference with a one-game lead over South Carolina and Florida, who both dropped road series this past weekend… The Dores’ six-game winning streak was snapped Friday when the club ran into a buzz saw named Alex Meyer… The big right-hander controlled the VU offense turning in a complete game, shutout in a 2-0 Kentucky victory… The loss wasted Sonny Gray’s complete game effort on 84 pitches… Gray struck out nine and issued no walks in his third complete game of the year… The shutout loss was the first for Vanderbilt this season and first shutout road loss since 2009… The game lasted a season-low 1 hour, 53 minutes… Vandy bounced back with a 10-3 win on Saturday night behind starter Grayson Garvin… The junior turned in eight strong innings to improve to 10-1 on the year and remain perfect in SEC play (8-0)…Freshmen Tony Kemp and Conrad Gregor led the offense combining to go 7-for-9 on the day… Kemp had four hits and Gregor capped a six-run first inning with his first career grand slam before going 3-for-4 in the game… The Commodores rallied for three runs with two outs in the ninth inning to claim Sunday’s contest 6-3… Five straight singles with two outs fueled the Vanderbilt rally… Aaron Westlake’s two-run homer in the first inning gave VU an early lead and the first baseman his team-best 10th round tripper of the season… Kemp, Anthony Gomez and Westlake all had two hits to pace the Dores’ 10-hit attack… Navery Moore earned his fourth win of the year in relief and Corey Williams notched his second save of the year… Grayson Garvin, Navery Moore and Sonny Gray were named to the National Pitcher of the Year award watch list on Monday… Vanderbilt was the only team in the nation to place three pitchers on the list.
