April 25, 2011

Vanderbilt freshman Alex Leatu was named to the 2011 SEC Women’s Tennis Championship Team, as announced by the league office Sunday evening.

In Vanderbilt’s second round win over Alabama on Friday, Leatu won 11 consecutive games between the second and third sets in the No. 1 singles match to clinch the victory for the Commodores. Leatu lost her first set in a tiebreaker, and was down 3-1 in the second set before rattling off 11 consecutive games to take the win.

“Alex’s play on Friday was outstanding,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “Despite being down 3-1 in the second set, she played very composed and found a way to win 11 consecutive games.”

The other members of the All-Tournament team are Allie Will and Olivia Janowicz of Florida, Cameron Ellis of UGA, and Brynn Boren and Maria Sorbello of Tennessee. Will was named the tournament MVP.

The Commodores will now await their NCAA Tournament seeding, which will be announced on Tuesday, May 3 at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
