Quick Slant: VUFB 101

March 25, 2011

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

  • James Franklin is looking forward to Vanderbilt’s first women’s football clinic, VUFB 101, on April 9. VUFB 101 specifically designed for Vanderbilt’s female audience to expand their knowledge of college football rules and to take advantage of an opportunity to get an insider’s look at the Commodore football program.
  • Eight teams in the current NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament graduate 100 percent of both their black and white players. Joining Vanderbilt on that list is our neighbor, Belmont, along with Brigham Young, Illinois, Notre Dame, Utah State, Villanova and Wofford.
  • Vanderbilt’s No. 4 rated bowling team recently achieved a rarity. Competing in their own Music City Classic, the Commodores notched a perfect 300 Baker game, where the five players rotate through the 10 frames. The 300 was just the second in program history, the first in the tournament’s history and one of just a handful in NCAA history. The ‘Dores are expecting to receive a berth in the NCAA Tournament when the field of eight is announced March 30.
  • Sunday’s baseball game at Arkansas will be televised by CSS and available on a live stream through ESPN. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. Here is a direct link to that stream: http://es.pn/hDbY8I
  • Soccer’s Molly Kinsella recently was named a recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The $7,500 scholarship is yet another significant honor for the Memphis product, who earlier this year was named a first-team Academic All-American. A complete listing of the NCAA scholarship recipients is found at www.ncaa.org.
