CORAL GABLES, Fla. Vanderbilt men’s tennis coach Ian Duvenhage is being inducted into the University of Miami Hall of Fame Thursday evening. He had been a star player as an undergraduate before leading the Hurricane’s women’s tennis program to new heights as the head coach from 1982-1988.
“I want to congratulate Ian on a richly-deserved honor,” said Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor David Williams. “Ian is an outstanding coach and he’s also an outstanding person. We are very proud of him and glad he is coaching the Commodores.”
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in finance from Miami in 1980, Duvenhage went on to earn his M.B.A. and begin his coaching career at his alma mater. His team posted a 131-44 record during his seven years, advancing to the NCAA post season tournament every year. Miami was ranked nationally in the top five for four seasons.
During the 1985 season, the team competed in the NCAA finals and was ranked second in the nation. The following year, Duvenhage coached Ronni Reis and Lise Gregory to the NCAA doubles championship. He was named the Wilson Intercollegiate Coach of the Year in 1986.
Ian became head coach at the University of Florida in 1988 and was a three-time SEC Coach of the Year with the Gators. He coached professionally before coming to Vanderbilt, where he currently has landed the No. 1 rated recruiting class in the nation.
Joining Duvenhage in Miami’s 2011 Hall of Fame Class is Daphne Jongejans-Bousquet (women’s diving), Bobby Hill (baseball), Yolanda McCray (women’s track), Dan Morgan (football), Santana Moss (football), Tyce Routson (men’s diving) and Reggie Wayne (football).
