Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt improved to 19-2 on the year but saw the team’s 12-game win streak come to an end Sunday with a loss to Mississippi State… In the polls the Commodores stayed at #2 in Baseball America’s poll, Perfect Game’s poll and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ poll and moved up to #2 in the Collegiate Baseball poll… VU blanked Purdue 9-0 on Tuesday on a season-best 16 hits… Four Vandy pitchers combined to post the team’s first shutout of the year with freshman Kevin Ziomek earning his first collegiate win… Anthony Gomez equaled a career-best and set a team season-high with four hits against the Boilermakers… The Dores posted another shutout on Friday night winning 10-0 over Mississippi State in the team’s SEC opener… Sonny Gray won his fifth game of the year with 7.1 scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts… Gray moved into the all-time Top 10 with his 20th career win and eighth all-time with 230 strikeouts in his career… Eight different Commodores had at least one hit in the win… Vanderbilt shutout the Bulldogs again on Saturday with a 4-0 win… The club’s three consecutive shutouts equals the feat from 2006 when the Dores shutout Ole Miss, Belmont and Auburn… Grayson Garvin picked up his third win pitching six scoreless frames… Tony Kemp led the offense with his first career three-hit game… Mississippi State rallied by Vanderbilt on Sunday to avoid a series sweep with a 9-8 win… The loss marked the first time this season VU had held a lead and lost… Anthony Gomez extended his hitting streak to 16 games on Sunday going 3-for-5… Aaron Westlake hit his third home run of the year with a two-run homer in the first inning.
