WASHINGTON, D.C. – Vanderbilt junior Ally Carey has been named to the 2011 Tewaaraton Award Watch List by the Greater Washington Sports Alliance.

The Tewaaraton Award is given annually to the top lacrosse player across all three divisions of collegiate lacrosse. The watch list represents student-athletes that each search committee identified as potential candidates for the honor. Ten finalists will be announced in May, with the award given out on June 2, 2011 at the historical Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C.

Carey, a 5-8 midfileder from Bel Air, Md., leads the Commodores in draw controls, ground balls and caused turnovers this season. Last season, she also led the Commodores in all three categories and broke her own school record by grabbing 63 draw controls.

Ally Carey is the perfect example of an all-around player,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. “Her impact on our team is felt in every aspect of the game, from her solid defense to her explosive offense. I’m glad the Tewaaraton committee is once again recognizing her as one of the best in the nation.”

A 2010 All-American, Carey was nominated for the 2010 Tewaaraton Award last April after being excluded from the preseason list. So far this year she has totaled 10 points as the main focus of opposing defenses, while helping the Commodores average nearly 14 goals per game. For her career, she has put up 77 goals and 52 assists for 129 points.

The Tewaaraton Award was formally established in August of 2000 by The University Club of Washington, DC and is the pre-eminent lacrosse award, which is awarded annually to the NCAA male and female lacrosse players of the year. Tradition dictates that each year the Tewaaraton Award celebrates one of the six tribal nations of the Iroquois Confederacy: the Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, and the Tuscarora. The 11th annual Tewaaraton Award event is set to recognize the Year of the Tuscarora.
