Vanderbilt head coach Melanie Balcomb
On matching up against Florida…
“We’ve had trouble defending them; we had trouble down there, we had trouble all night tonight. They just got good looks and they knocked down shots and we didn’t take anything away from them. We came out flat and then tried to play catch up all night.”
On having to defeat South Carolina to clinch a first round bye in the SEC Tournament…
“We just have to play. Now we’ve lost a day of prep time and they [the Vanderbilt players] have to decide how bad they want it. We have to play harder than we did tonight, that’s for sure.”
Florida head coach Amanda Butler
On overcoming 20.5 percent shooting in the first half …
“I felt like the shots were taking were the shots we wanted. That’s what we really dwelt on at halftime. We didn’t change a lot. On offense, we just needed to shoot the ball with more confidence. We had tremendous mental changes in some key players like Ndidi Madu. She’s our Nashville girl (from McGavock High). Was maybe a little too hyped. And then she came and gave us six big points in the second half that we really needed.”
On taking advantage of Vanderbilt’s transition defense in the second half …
“We certainly didn’t feel like we could run them to death, but we did what to put pressure on their transition defense. We knew they were going to answer that with a lot of pressure coming right back at us. That was just as important for us to be able to sustain our defensive effort.”
