VANDERBILT RE-VU
Vanderbilt started the season with four straight wins, beating San Diego three times and San Diego State once on their West Coast trip. The Commodores scored a 4-3 win on Friday in a rain-shortened, five-inning game. Anthony Gomez led the way with two hits and one RBI. VU had to rally for four runs in the ninth inning to beat San Diego State on Saturday, 7-3. Jason Esposito had three hits and two RBI to pace the offense. Vandy swept a doubleheader from the Toreros on Sunday 3-1 and 7-3 behind the strong pitching of Taylor Hill and Grayson Garvin. Hill tossed 7.1 innings allowing just one run in the first game while Garvin fanned 10 and was perfect through six innings in the second game.
ON THE BUMPWednesday, February 23
RHP T.J. Pecoraro (0-0, -.–) vs. RHP Garrett Fanchier (0-0, 2.25)
Pecoraro makes his collegiate debut after being drafted in the 48th round by Houston out of high school.
MERELY FRESHMEN
Tony Kemp and Kevin Ziomek might just be freshmen but the duo was impressive on opening weekend. Kemp wrapped up the weekend 6-for-16 (.375) with three RBI, four runs scored and four stolen bases while starting in all four games in left field for the Dores. Ziomek pitched 5.1 innings against San Diego State on Saturday but received no decision after the Aztecs rallied to tie the game against the bullpen. The lefty fanned five and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in his collegiate debut.
IRON-LAMM
Senior pitcher Mark Lamm pitched in three of the club’s four games over the weekend after pitching in no games last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Lamm also entered all three games with runners on base and allowed only three of the seven inherited runners to score. At this rate Lamm will appear in over 40 games and inherit nearly 95 runners this season.
RUNNIN’ COMMODORES
Vanderbilt stole 12 bases over the four-game West Coast trip to not-so-sunny San Diego and enter the week with the most stolen bases in the SEC. Tony Kemp and Mike Yastrzemski both lead the league with four steals each. Four different Dores had at least one steal with Jason Esposito chipping in three and Bryan Johns one.
CONNECT FOUR
Mike Yastrzemski is the only Commodore to have registered at least one hit in each of the team’s first four games. The sophomore outfielder went 5-for-12 with four runs scored and two RBI over the weekend.
GOOD RATIO
The Vanderbilt pitching staff flexed their muscle over the weekend in San Diego striking out 36 batters and walking just four, that’s a ratio of 9 to 1.
WEEKEND SHOWDOWN
Vanderbilt welcomes #8 Stanford to Hawkins Field this weekend for a Top 10 showdown. The Cardinal started the year by taking two-of-three from Rice in Houston and beat #17 California 3-2 yesterday. Stanford beat the Commodores twice in a three-game series in Palo Alto in 2009.
