Head coach Melanie Balcomb
On rebounding from the loss to Tennessee…
“It felt good. We gave them two days off for rest and then we came back and had a really lethargic practice, like we were still in mourning [over the loss to Tennessee]. I was a little concerned, but then yesterday we had an excellent practice and today we had a really good shoot around. All we talked about was how we were going to recover from that game and get back to how we had played. I think it really helped that we had played so well at Alabama and this was a similar type of team that was going to press us the whole game. We had had that success in the past, so I kept reminding the team about the success we had in the game before Tennessee.”
On holding Arkansas’ Lyndsay Harris to just two points…
“We keyed in on their big three, [Lyndsay] Harris, [Sarah] Watkins and [C’eria] Ricketts and we didn’t’ feel that Ricketts was the best shooter of the three, so we have to do a better job. She got really comfortable with the ball screen and attacking and pulling up. She hit some big shots down the stretch for them.
By shutting down Harris and Watkins, it left Ricketts to play one-on-one a lot, and we knew that one kid wasn’t going to beat us.”
On Lister’s play tonight…
“She has been struggling from three and I think she’s been rushing her shots and I wanted her to know that we still wanted her to shoot the ball, and she just need to make some adjustments and calm down a little. She has been really excited playing some early games in the SEC. I liked her composure tonight. And I liked her shot selection.
She took great shots. She was wide open. A lot of that was because of Jence [Rhoads] and Steph [Holzer]. Once we got the ball to high post and kicked out, it allowed her to have wide open looks. She didn’t rush and took her time.”
On Stephanie Holzer’s play…
“I didn’t think there was anyone who could guard Steph and her size. We played her for offense, played Jordan [Coleman] and Tiffany [Clarke] for defense. They’re all doing a great job with their roles. Jordan and Tiff gave us great defense when we needed it and Steph gave us great offense when we needed it. I really liked what were doing with rotating. Elan Brown came in and rebounded and did an awesome job for us against that zone. She gives us the four guard offense. She’s 6’1″ and she’s playing guard.”
On playing in front of a small crowd due to the weather…
“I thanked the fans who were here tonight because it was tough to get here, even for myself. I know that there were real fans in the stands tonight if they were here. I thought the cheerleaders and the band being here was huge. They created an environment for our players.”
Jasmine Lister
On her play tonight…
“I felt more relaxed and comfortable. I didn’t rush my shots this time. Especially when we have good ball movement, it’s easier for me to get more open shots.”
On Arkansas going on a run early in the second half to tie the game…
“We just have to be more consistent on defense and not take quick shots on offense because they were getting a couple of transition points. We just needed to play smarter on defense.”
On getting confidence from this win…
“It was pretty big. We needed to get our momentum back and our confidence back. It’s definitely good coming in to the Kentucky game, on the road. It was a big confidence booster.”
Stephanie Holzer
On shutting down Arkansas’ leading scorer, Lyndsay Harris…
“Coming into this game we knew our scouting report, we know that she is a good player. It was one of our focuses, and I think our team executed really well by making her have an off night.”
On her mid-range shooting…
“I’ve been working on it all season. I’ve always had that element in my game. I like facing up and being able to shoot that 15-foot shot and then also being able to put my back to the basket. It makes me more versatile and it makes it easier for my teammates to get open and get better shots.”
On Hannah Tuomi having an off night…
“Everyone has their off nights. I just went out there and played. I think the rest of the team did a really good job of picking up energy and doing what we do and stepping up for each other.”
On Jence Rhoads grabbing nine rebounds…
“She knows how to navigate the traffic and get to the basket. I think everyone did a good job boxing out tonight and that left a lot of balls that were able to get scooped up, and Jence did a really good job.”
