Johnson 8th, Dores 12th at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Senior Hudson Johnson posted his 20th par-or-better round of the season on Saturday to finish in a tie for eighth at the 2010 NCAA East Region Championship at the Course at Yale.

Johnson’s one-under 69 gave him a three-day total of 208 (-2), a personal-best for the two-time individual medalist who competed in 37 events during his Commodore career. The eighth place finish, however, was not good enough to advance to the NCAA National Championship, as ETSU’s Rhys Enoch shared medalist honors to earn the lone individual qualifying spot.

In the team competition, Texas and Kent State shared top billing to advance with UCLA, Penn State and Virginia. Vanderbilt finished in 12th place after shooting a 10-over 290 on Saturday to finish at 18-over through 54 holes. The Commodores were in ninth place through 36 holes, only three strokes out of the top five, but finished 15 strokes out of qualifying for nationals.

Along with Johnson, fellow senior Chris Rockwell also had a solid round Saturday. Rockwell shot a one-over 71 to finish at 217 (+7) and place in a tie for 49th place in the field of 75 golfers. The Owings Mills, Md., native competed in 10 team tournaments this season after making a total of 11 appearances in his first three seasons in Nashville.

Sophomore Trey DelGreco shot a three-over 73 to tie with Rockwell at seven-over for the week. Junior Ryan Haselden went one-under through the first two rounds before carding a seven-over 77 on Saturday. He finished in a tie for 46th place at 216 (+6). Sophomore Charlie Grace also had a 77 in the third round, finishing at 229 in 68th place.

For the second straight year, Vanderbilt’s season ends at the NCAA Regionals. The Commodores last advanced to the NCAA National Championships in 2007 after placing fifth in the West Regional in Tempe, Ariz., that year.

Vanderbilt boasted another successful season in 2010. For the third straight year, the Commodores claimed a team championship this spring by sharing top honors at the 2010 Samford Intercollegiate. That victory came during a span of four top-five finishes for Vanderbilt.
