Commodore Golf finishes fourth in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team finished in fourth place in the 18-team field at the 2010 Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.

Senior Hudson Johnson and sophomore Trey DelGreco both finished in the tournament’s Top 10 to lead the Commodores to a solid Spring opening.

Johnson shot a two-under 70 during Tuesday’s final round to finish at one-over for the event, placing him with DelGreco in a tie for ninth. DelGreco had shot the Commodores’ low rounds on Sunday and Monday before carding a three-over 75 on Tuesday.

Vanderbilt finished only five strokes back of team champion Ole Miss. Illinois State shot Tuesday’s low round to move up to second place, one stroke behind the Rebels and one stroke ahead of third-place Louisville. Vanderbilt and MTSU rounded out the top five.

Senior Chris Rockwell matched DelGreco’s final score of three-over 75. Rockwell ended the event in a tie for 46th out of a field of 102 golfers. Junior Ryan Haselden shot a five-over 77 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 35th. Sophomore Charlie Grace’s six-over 78 did not count toward VU’s team score on Tuesday. Grace finished in a tie for 41st.

Competing as an individual, freshman Will Snipes placed in a tie for 46th with Rockwell after shooting a six-over 78 on Tuesday.
