BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Vanderbilt senior forward Hannah Tuomi was named SEC Co-Player of the Week by the league office on Monday after averaging 22.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in wins over Southern Illinois and UT Martin last week.
Tuomi made 80 percent of her shots (16-of-20) from the field and set career highs in points and rebounds in consecutive games.
The Thornton, Colo., native shared top honors with Kentucky’s Victoria Dunlap. The award is the first of Tuomi’s career and the first for a Commodore since Merideth Marsh was named SEC Player of the Week Nov. 30, 2009.
Tuomi opened the week by posting a career-high 29 points on 9-of-13 shooting against Southern Illinois. She came within one free throw of becoming the first Commodore to score 30 points in a game since Carla Thomas in 2006.
For an encore, Tuomi notched her second double-double of the season and eighth of her career with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds against UT Martin. Tuomi also finished the game 7-of-7 from the floor.
Tuomi also set career highs in free throw attempts and makes against Southern Illinois, finishing the game 11-of-15 from the charity stripe.
On the season Tuomi leads the team in scoring (15.6) and rebounding (6.9). She also ranks among NCAA leaders with a 70.8 percent field-goal percentage.
The honor by the league off ice is the second of the season for the Commodores. On Nov. 15, Stephanie Holzer was named SEC Freshman of the Week.
The Commodores are just beginning final exams this week and will not play again until Sunday, Dec. 19 at Duquesne.
