Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball team will look to pick up its first road win of the season on Sunday when the Commodores travel to Denver, Colo., to play Denver University at 3 p.m. CT at Magness Arena.
The 23rd-ranked Commodores (4-2) enter Sunday’s game following a 79-68 loss at Bowling Green on Wednesday. Vanderbilt is 0-2 this season on the road with losses at Florida State and Bowling Green. Sunday’s game will mark the beginning of a five-day stretch where Vanderbilt plays three games leading up to the start of final exams.
Vanderbilt’s matchup with Denver (3-4) will be the first in school history and it will also be the school’s first trip to the state of Colorado since notching an 81-76 victory at Colorado on Nov. 11, 2006. Sunday’s game will be a homecoming for senior forward Hannah Tuomi, who is from Thornton, Colo., which is located just north of Denver.
Sunday’s game will air on 560 AM in Nashville with play-by-play announcer Charlie Mattos on the call. Fans may also listen to the game online by subscribing to All-Access on VUCommodores.com. Denver will also stream the game live on Denverpioneers.com. There is a cost associated with the webcast.
Last Time Out
Vanderbilt entered its game at Bowling Green looking for redemption following two straight losses to the Falcons, but the Commodores will have to wait a little longer for that redemption, as Bowling Green handed 23rd-ranked Vanderbilt a 79-68 loss on Wednesday at Anderson Arena.
The loss was Vanderbilt’s second of the season as the team fell to 4-2 overall and 0-2 on the road this season. Bowling Green improved to 7-1 and earned its 34 straight regular season win on the road.
Vanderbilt trailed by 12 at the half, but was able to cut it to three, 51-48, with 14:31 to play. However, Bowling Green put the game out of reach by going on a 16-2 run, which gave the Falcons a 67-50 lead — their largest of the game with 8:36 to play.
The decisive run was triggered by the play of Lauren Prochaska, who scored 14 of the team’s 16 points during the span and finished with 31 points.
Playing the Best
Vanderbilt has not shied away from playing top competition in non-conference play. Vanderbilt has already faced three teams picked to win their conference this year and another in Florida State that advanced to the Elite Eight last season. Overall, Vanderbilt’s opponents have a winning percentage of 60% and four of the six opponents have no worse than a 4-2 record.
Tuomi Homecoming
Senior forward Hannah Tuomi (Thornton, Colo.) will be playing her first game in her home state Sunday. Tuomi attended Horizon High School, where she was named Ms. Basketball in 2006.
Road Blues
Vanderbilt started the season 0-2 on the road for the first time since 1999-00 season when Vanderbilt lost at Purdue and at Duke.
Balcomb One Win from 200
Vanderbilt Head Coach has 199 career wins in nine years at Vanderbilt. Balcomb will become the third coach to win 200 games at Vanderbilt, joining Phil Lee and Jim Foster.
Lister Not Playing Like a Freshman
Freshman guard Jasmine Lister has not looked like a freshman this season. The 5-foot-4 Lister is one of two players to start every game for Vanderbilt this season and is the only player to score in double figures in every game.
Commodores Lighting it Up
Vanderbilt has been one of the most efficient offensive teams in the SEC this season. The team leads the league in field-goal percentage (49.8%), three-point field-goal percentage (44.8%) and free-throw percentage (70.6%).
Turnovers Costly
The Commodores rank ninth in the SEC in turnover margin and average more turnovers (18.7) than any other team in the league.
Foggie Has Scary Injury
Christina Foggie received a scare in Vanderbilt’s game at Bowling Green. The freshman guard was knocked to the floor after running into a screen. As a precaution, Foggie was placed in a neck brace and taken off the court on a stretcher before spending the night at a hospital in Bowling Green. Her test results came back negative and she had full movement in her extremities. She returned home to Nashville the following day with athletic trainer Michele Loftis.
About Denver
Denver is 3-4 this season after finishing 18-13 overall and 12-6 in the Sun Belt last year. The Pioneers return four starters from last year and are led by junior forward Kaetlyn Murdoch, who was the Sun Belt Player of the Week this past week and averages 16.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
Against the Sun Belt
Vanderbilt is 32-21 all-time against teams that are currently in the Sun Belt. Vanderbilt is 20-7 at home against teams from the Sun Belt, but are 8-13 on the road and 4-1 at neutral sites. The last time Vanderbilt faced a Sun Belt team was Dec. 6, 2009 in Nashville when Vanderbilt topped Western Kentucky 79-73 in overtime. The last time the Commodores played on the road at a Sun Belt opponent was Nov. 16, 2008 at Western Kentucky when the Commodores won 90-72.
Vanderbilt in Colorado
Sunday’s game will be the Commodores’ third all-time trip to Colorado. Vanderbilt is 2-0 in the state with both wins coming at Colorado. All-time, Vanderbilt is 4-1 against teams from the state with all five games coming against the Buffaloes.
