The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team opens the fall 2010 season at the 43rd annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships this weekend in Athens, Ga. Singles play begins Friday at 8 a.m.
“Our performance in practice has been superb,” said Vanderbilt men’s tennis head coach Ian Duvenhage. “The Southern Intercollegiates is an opportunity for our players to shine in competition.”
All eight members of the team will make the trip to Georgia and will face tough competition from 33 other schools, including SEC foes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The field of competitors will be divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. There will be a maximum of two rounds of singles consolation matches. Division I features Ryan Lipman, Alex DiValerio and Bryant Salcedo, while Adam Baker, Blake Bazarnik, Charlie Jones and Alex Zotov are in Division II. Andy Pulido is the lone Commodore in Division III. In doubles play, Salcedo and Zotov will pair up in Division I and could possibly meet Lipman and Baker in the finals. Jones and DiValero are paired up in Division II, along with Bazarnik and Pulido.
Results from the tournament will be posted at the end of each day.
