2010 Puerto Rico Tipoff Bracket ![]()
Vanderbilt’s basketball’s tropical destination for 2010 has been set for a while now, but the Commodores’ opponent had yet to be announced. That changed on Thursday, when VU learned that they would take on Nebraska in the first round of the 2010 Puerto Rico Tip-Off on November 18 at 12:30 p.m. Central time. The game will be shown live on ESPNU.
Vanderbilt will play either Davidson or West Virginia in their second game on November 19. Other teams in the tournament include North Carolina, Minnesota, Western Kentucky, and Hofstra. The last day of the tournament is set for Sunday, November 21.
Notable
– The Commodores and Cornhuskers will meet for the seventh time in the history of the two schools. Vanderbilt holds a 4-2 series advantage. The last meeting came in Honolulu at the Rainbow Classic on December 30, 1997, a game VU won, 80-69.
– Games will take place at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan, a venue that has a capacity of 18,500. Paul McCartney and Metallica have visited the arena so far this year, and the WWE takes over the venue in September. The size of the arena is a far cry from the other venues Vanderbilt has visited in the past for holiday tournaments.
Size of the past four venues for holiday tournaments:
1. Mario Morales Coliseum – 2006 San Juan Shootout – 5,500
2. South Padre Island Convention Center – 2007 South Padre Invitational – 2.500
3. Moon Palace Ballroom – 2008 Cancun Challenge – 800
4. Lahaina Civic Center – 2009 EA Sports Maui Invitational – 2,400
– VU has played Davidson three times (2-1), North Carolina nine times (3-6), Minnesota four times (0-4), Hofstra once (1-0), and Western Kentucky 24 times. The Commodores have never faced West Virginia.
– This will be the second trip to Puerto Rico for the Commodores. Vanderbilt went 2-1 and lost to Appalachian State in the finals of the 2006 San Juan Shootout.
