NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s tennis player Catherine Newman was named to the first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV women’s at-large team on Tuesday, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
It marks the third straight year that Newman has been named academic all-district by ESPN The Magazine and CoSIDA.
Newman was a first-team all-district and second-team Academic All-American selection as a sophomore and a second-team all district selection as a junior.
Newman recently graduated from Vanderbilt with a degree in civil engineering while minoring in mathematics. A four-year letterwinner, Newman finished her career in the classroom with an impressive 3.89 cumulative GPA. In addition, Newman was named to the Dean’s List all eight semesters she attended Vanderbilt. Following graduation, Newman will attend graduate school at Stanford University and work towards a master’s degree in engineering.
In 2008, Newman became the first Vanderbilt women’s tennis player since Annie Menees to be named an Academic All-American. Newman was a second team selection while Menees was named to the third-team in 2004.
The academic award for Newman is just one of many that Newman has garnered this year. Earlier this month Newman was named a first-team All-SEC selection, SEC Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and ITA Ohio Valley Arthur Asche Sportsmanship/Leadership Player of the Year.
