Lipman Bio Sheet | NCAA Singles Draw
ATHENS, Ga. – Ohio Valley Rookie of the Year, SEC Co-Freshman of the Year and First Team All-SEC are among the accolades Vanderbilt freshman Ryan Lipman has earned this year. He’s defeated 10 ranked opponents and played No. 1 singles throughout the year, but despite his vast array of individual accomplishments on the court, there is still one thing he is missing — a win in postseason.
The Nashville native will get his opportunity for a postseason win at 12:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday when he faces 25th-ranked Thibaut Charron of Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship. Lipman is 22-13 this season, including 12-10 in the No. 1 singles slot in dual play.
Ranked No. 34 nationally, Lipman has played two postseason matches this year and is 0-1, having lost to Mississippi State’s George Coupland in the first round of the SEC Tournament. In Vanderbilt’s match against Virginia Tech in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Lipman was leading No. 55 Yoann Re, 6-3, 2-1, before the match was halted.
When he takes the court on Wednesday, Lipman will be the first Commodore to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship since Ryan Preston in 2008.
Lipman was one of 48 at-large selections to make the field of 64 individuals. The tournament will be played May 26-31.
Charron is 23-7 this season and was named the Farnsworth/ITA Atlantic Region Senior Player of the Year. Charron went 19-5 in dual play and helped lead VCU to the NCAA Tournament, where it lost to Duke in the first round, 4-0.
Should Lipman defeat Charron, it could set up a second-round rematch against Ohio State’s Chase Buchanan, who defeated Lipman to win the 2009 USTA Boys’ 18 National Championship.
