Baseball set to host No. 9 Louisville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — After playing nine of its last 10 games on the road, Vanderbilt baseball will return home for a special midweek contest against No. 9 Louisville Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Hawkins Field.

The Commodores, ranked No. 17 by the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, are 35-13 overall and 12-10 in Southeastern Conference play after taking two of three from defending national champion LSU over the weekend.

The remaining tickets to the May 11 baseball game with Louisville are being offered free of charge, with all fans encouraged to make monetary contributions to the Nashville Red Cross and/or food and water donations to Second Harvest Food Bank to help victims of flooding in Nashville.

Approximately 1,300 tickets will be distributed beginning at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow at the McGugin Center box office. Special activities are being planned around the game.

Jess Neely Drive will close at 5 p.m. tomorrow as a pedestrian safety measure.

Louisville, ranked No. 9 by the coaches, is 40-8 overall and 16-5 in Big East play after taking two of three from Georgetown on the road last weekend. The Cardinals are 3-2 against SEC teams this year having taken two of three at Ole Miss earlier in the year before splitting a pair of midweek games against Kentucky.

First baseman Andrew Clark leads the team with a .389 batting average with 11 homers and 49 RBI. As a team UL is batting .319 with 71 homers and 355 runs scored in 48 games (7.4 per game).

The Cardinals pitching staff has a 3.64 team ERA with 376 strikeouts and 125 walks in 435.1 innings.

Both teams’ starting pitchers are to be determined.

Vanderbilt owns a 14-3 all-time series advantage and has won three of the last four meetings between the schools. The Cardinals and Commodores played in the championship round of the NCAA Louisville Regional a year ago. VU won the first game, forcing a second game where the winner advanced to the Super Regionals against Cal State Fullerton. Louisville came up with the victory at home to advance in the tournament.
