NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt will close out its six-game baseball road trip against Austin Peay on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Raymond C. Hand Park in Clarksville.
The Commodores (32-11, 9-9 SEC) will look to snap a two-game losing skid after dropping a doubleheader Sunday against Tennessee in Knoxville.
Sophomore left-hander Grayson Garvin (1-1) will make his first start of the season against the Govs. He picked up his first win of the year last Wednesday against Middle Tennessee, throwing 3.2 innings of three-hit scoreless relief with three strikeouts in the Commodores 11-10 win. On the season he has nine strikeouts and a walk in 5.2 innings of work in four appearances, with just one unearned run allowed.
The Govs are 21-18 overall and 4-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference and stepped out of league play over the weekend with a pair of wins over SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday.
Senior utility player Matt Kole will look to close out an impressive April performance which has seen him bat .463 with five home runs and 25 RBI. He entered the month batting just .267 with 15 RBI. For the season he is hitting at a .343 clip with six homers and 40 RBI.
Austin Peay as a team is batting .302 with 29 homers and 301 runs scored (7.7 per game).
Sophomore southpaw Jeremy Dobbs will make his first start of the year against VU on Tuesday. He has seven relief appearances this season and is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA with five strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
VU holds a 51-19-2 all-time lead in a series that dates back to 1958. The Commodores have won 13 of the last 14 meetings going back to the 2002 season, with the lone loss a 9-8 decision in Clarksville last April.
After Tuesday’s contest, VU will host SEC Eastern Division foe Georgia (12-28, 3-15 SEC) over the weekend. The teams open on Friday at 6 p.m. and will continue on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. The Saturday game will be televised regionally on CSS and on the internet at ESPN3.com.
