ST. SIMON’S ISLAND, Ga. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team will travel to the 2010 Southeastern Conference Championships this weekend at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club.
Head Coach Tom Shaw has chosen seniors Hudson Johnson and Chris Rockwell, junior Ryan Haselden, sophomore Trey DelGreco and freshman Will Snipes to represent the Commodores at this week’s event.
Vanderbilt took four consecutive Top 5 finishes in the middle of the regular season, highlighted by a victory at the 2010 Samford Intercollegiate, but finished in the bottom half of its last two events.
This week’s tournament features nine teams ranked in Golfweek’s Top 50. The 12-team field ranks among the toughest the Commodores have faced this season. Ten of the 12 league teams competing for this week’s championship have already won tournaments this season, including Vanderbilt.
Designed by famed course designer Thomas Fazio, the Seaside Course opened in 2005. This week, the course will play at par-70 from 7,055 yards.
The SEC Golf Tournament has been played at Sea Island since 2001, and returns to the Seaside Course for the first time since 2007. That year, the Commodores placed seventh with a three-day total of 886. The Sea Island Golf Club has enjoyed a legacy as one of America’s premier golf clubs since it opened in 1927.
Georgia won the 2009 SEC Men’s Golf Championship by a 13-stroke margin over second-place Arkansas.
