The Commodore offense continued to show improvement during full-contact drills that came at the conclusion of the team’s Tuesday night practice.
The unit produced quick touchdowns in full-contact segments dedicated to red-zone and third-down efficiency, then marched 60 yards for a score in the first of four full-field possessions.
The Vanderbilt defense also had plenty of highlights, including third-down quarterback sacks by young defensive ends Johnell Thomas and Walker May.
The Commodores are expected to practice Friday afternoon, then move into Vanderbilt Stadium this Saturday for the Black & Gold Scrimmage. The featured scrimmage is open to the public, free of charge, and starts at 10:30 a.m.
Tailback Kennard Reeves started the offensive fireworks, opening the red-zone session with a quick 17-yard touchdown off left tackle. In a 12-play segment on third-down situations, Reeves found another hole off left guard and broke into the clear for another long touchdown.
Quarterback Jared Funk also directed a scoring drive on the first drive of the team’s four-possession scrimmage. After three Warren Norman rushes produced a pair of first downs, Funk hit wideout John Cole for 29 yards. Two plays later from the 3-yard line, Funk handed off to Tray Herndon on a reverse that netted the touchdown.
In other full-contact action:
– Thomas and senior end Teriall Brannon produced consecutive quarterback sacks to force long field goals in the full-contact, red-zone portion of practice.
– Senior linebacker John Stokes tackled quarterback Larry Smith for a 5-yard tackle for loss that helped eventually force a fourth down.
– May continued his impressive spring performance by dominating the final scrimmage possession. On first down, May chased down a tailback for a 4-yard loss, then sacked quarterback Jordan Rodgers on 3rd-and-long.
Several Commodores were kept out of the practice, including defensive tackle T.J. Greenstone, linebacker Chris Marve, and cornerbacks Casey Hayward and Eric Samuels.
