Baseball Hosts Belmont Tuesday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt baseball’s team is back at home and will play eight straight games at Hawkins Field starting against in-town foe Belmont on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Commodores are 24-6 overall and 5-4 in Southeastern Conference play after dropping two of three at No. 8 Florida over the weekend.

Senior right-hander Drew Hayes will take the mound on Tuesday for VU. Hayes is 2-0 on the year with a 4.98 ERA. He last pitched against Wofford on March 31, and gave up three runs on three hits in two innings of relief.

The Bruins are 16-13 overall and 5-7 in Atlantic Sun play, after dropping two of three at Kennesaw State over the weekend.

Sophomore outfielder Dylan Craig leads the team with a .415 batting average and 36 runs scored in 29 starts. Junior first baseman Nate Woods is the top power source with 13 homers and 49 RBI to got with a .356 batting average. As a team BU has a .316 batting average with 31 homers and 229 runs scored (7.9 per game).

Sophomore right-hander Matt Hamann (4-1, 4.55 ERA) will take the mound for Belmont in his first start of the year. He has 30 strikeouts and 22 walks in 29.2 innings with a save in 14 relief appearances. WU’s pitching staff has a 7.50 team ERA with 171 strikeouts and 129 walks in 256.2 innings of work.

Vanderbilt leads the all-time series 45-10.

After Tuesday’s contest, VU will host SEC Eastern Division leader South Carolina (22-6, 7-2 SEC) in a pivotal conference series over the weekend. The teams open on Friday at 6 p.m. and will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
